British aid to Somaliland not only helps the poor but also keeps terrorists and pirates at bay.

“This is not just aid from Britain; it is aid for Britain too. Our aid to Somalia [Somaliland] is helping to make Britain safer, because conflict doesn’t just claim innocent lives in Somalia [Somaliland]; it also leads to international problems like piracy, migration and terrorism. None of these will be solved without tackling their root causes: ongoing instability and extreme poverty.”— U.K.’s International Development Secretary, Andrew Mitchell.

Somaliland’s New Vision of Foreign Policy on resolving Crisis and Conflict in the Horn

Until 1990, Somaliland had suffered from conflict, civil strife and subversion, maladministration and neglect – all the ingredients supposed to create a “failed State”. In 1991 Somalialnd has finally decided to end the non-functioning Union with Somalia which was inevitable; and the usual predictions did apply to Somalia/Mogadishu as the country was picked on by warlords, bandits, extremists of various sorts. 20 years of internationally assisted negotiations have solved none of these problems.

Wilton Park Conference, 7-9 February 2011: Somalia: Building Stability, Accepting Reality

Ministers, Distinguished guests, Ladies & Gentlemen,

Thank you for inviting me as the Foreign Minister of Somaliland to participate in this international conference in order to share our experience in piece-making and state-building with you in the search for piece and security in Somalia.

We see the invitation as recognition of the important role that Somaliland can play in the regional affairs and as an opportunity to present our national views to the international community.

What our attendance also shows is the increasing political maturity in Somaliland and our ability to contribute to the regional stabilization efforts. Achieving international political recognition remains our goal. We meet on a bleak anniversary: it is 20 years since Somalia collapsed into anarchy. Many Somalis have been killed.

The Spoilers of Somali unity can’t be The Crusaders of its revival.

The Spoilers of Somali unity can’t be The Crusaders of its revival.

In time of conflict, only history can be the guide to a solution.

Some Somalis, notably those of Mohamoud Sulaiman ( a segment of Majerteen tribe)  are clamouring for  Somali-weyn ( grater Somalia ). Their province of Puntland is officially part of southern Somalia , yet puntland, established in 1998, has been separated from the rest of the south. The name puntland is a casual title introduced for the formation of that entity, formed to oppose Somaliland political advancement. Both internally and externally, the area is known as Majerteenia. The dominant tribe in that terrain is Mohamoud Sulaiman much blamed for the  disintegration of the old Somalia .

The Republic of Somaliland has endured and surmounted great challenges since reclaiming its independence from the failed Union with Somalia in 1991. Embracing democracy and implementing it through elections were the last tests that it has successfully achieved. The subsequent peaceful power hand over between the outgoing President and the newly elected President cemented the notion that genuine democracy has deeply rooted in a country located in a region over shadowed by religious extremism, piracy and conflicts.
