Somaliland Vice-President Ahmed Yusuf Yassin has attended a government organized gathering in his home region intended to boost support for his UDUB party.

Mr Yassin arrived in the small town of Sheikh this morning to address people who were gathered there.

Attendees said not all of the local people who wanted to attend the gathering were allowed in. A large number of government employees were bussed in from nearby cities of Berbera and Burao for the gathering.

Some local elders complained about how the event was organized. They expected it to be a town hall style meeting with the community and its leaders with an opportunity to directly speak to the Vice-President and air their grievances about unkept promises he made to them in previous campaigns. Instead the elders said it turned out to be a political gathering and the Vice-President was not interested in hearing their grievances.

The opposition parties accuse the government of misusing public funds and the government-controlled media for its own party political campaigns.
