Supply plane crash kills Eleven in Uganda
Kampala (Somaliland Globe) — A chartered cargo plane carrying supplies for the African peacekeepers in Somalia crashed shortly after take off killing all 11 on board.
The plane bound for Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, plunged into Lake Victoria after taking off from Kampala’s Entebbe International Airport early in the morning. Among the people feared dead include senior army officers from Burundi. The nationalities of the crew included Russians and Ukrainians.
The plane that crashed, Ilyushin IL-76, is frequently used for transporting cargo in Africa.
Nearly two years ago in March 2007, at the height of the war between invading Ethiopian forces and Islamic Courts Union, a similar chartered plane belonging to a TransAVIAexport Airlines crashed near Mogadishu after taking off from the city’s main airport also killing 11 people on board. The Somali government at the time insisted it was an accident but the transport ministry of Belarus said it was shot down.
