Hargeisa, March 2, 2009 (Somaliland Globe) – Somaliland’s President, Mr. Dahir Rayaale Kahin left the country today for a visit to London, a government spokesman said today in press release.

The statement said that the President, who will be accompanied by his wife, Huda Barkhat and his Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdillahi M Dulale, will meet with the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. David Miliband and the Foreign Office Minister, Lord Mallach-Brown.

During his visit, the President will discuss with these officials on the development of the relations between Somaliland and Britain, added the statement.

However, independent sources told the Somaliland Globe that the President’s invitation to London is related to the Somaliland’s democratisation programme and particularly to the scheduled presidential election, which has now been put off for the third time in a row.

As one of the biggest donors to Somaliland’s democratisation programme, the British government would like to hear from the President why the election has been delayed on several times.

The Foreign Secretary of KULMIYE party, the main opposition in Somaliland, Dr. Mohamed A Omar, has met the British Foreign Office Minister, Lord Mallach- Brown last week and discussed on his party’s views about the delayed elections and stated that he wants the election to be held on time.
