Mogadishu, Somalia – (Somaliland Globe) — At least 11 Burundian soldiers have been killed and 15 others sustained serious injuries in a suicide attack on their base in Mogadishu on Sunday.

Spokesman for the Shabaab Islamist insurgents claimed 2 of its members carried out the attack. He said the first suicide bomber entered a small church inside the base detonating his explosives-filled jacket. The spokesperson Sheikh Mukhtar Robow also known as Abu Mansur, said the second explosion was carried out after a car filled with explosives entered the base.

He said the second attacker targeted soldiers as they were fleeing the site of the first explosion.

The Al-Shabaab insurgent group which now controls large parts of Southern Somalia, declared war on Somalia’s newly appointed president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed who himself was a member of the former Islamic Courts Union.

Al-Shabaab insurgents increased their attacks on Mogadishu following the withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops from Somalia.

Uganda and Burundi are the only African countries who have peacekeeping forces in Mogadishu. Other African countries expressed willingness to join the AU peacekeeping forces however none have yet provided forces.
