People in Somaliland are awaiting for the day when they can cast their votes in Presidential elections for the first time in six years.

Since reasserting its independence, Somaliland has held presidential elections once, in 2003, in which President Riyale was declared winner by a margin of 80 votes.

The President’s term lasts for 5 years after which time he is able to run for a second 5 year term. The upcoming election should have been held in April 2008, but Riyale administration extended its term by one year in controversial decision supported by another unelected body, the Guurti.

The  elections is set to be held at the end of March 2009.
